What is academic acceleration?

Per the Academic Acceleration Policy 2195, all high school students will have greater access to rigorous advanced courses, including dual credit programs. Students will be automatically enrolled in advanced courses that lead to dual enrollment courses.

What are the student enrollment requirements for auto-enrollment in an advanced level course(s)?

The following steps will be taken to ensure a sequence of courses that leads to dual credit enrollment for students meeting or exceeding standard on the state assessment or successful completion by earning credit in an advanced level course.

Meeting or exceeding the 8th grade English language arts state assessment.

• Students will be auto-enrolled in advanced level English language arts in 9th and 10th grade.

• When students enroll in World History during their 9th or 10th grade year they will be auto-enrolled in the dual credit World History course the high school offers.

Meeting or exceeding the 8th grade mathematics state assessment.

• Students in 9th and 10th grade will be enrolled in a mathematics course sequence that places them on the trajectory to enroll in a dual credit math course in high school.

Meeting or exceeding the 8th grade science state assessment.

• Students will be auto-enrolled in a science course that places them on the trajectory to enroll in a dual credit course by no later than their junior year of high school.

Meeting or exceeding the high school English language arts state assessment or successfully completing an advanced level or dual credit English language arts course the previous year.

• Students will be auto-enrolled in a dual credit English language arts course.

Meeting or exceeding the high school English language arts state assessment or successfully completing an advanced level or dual credit social studies course the previous year.

• Students will be auto-enrolled in a dual credit social studies course that aligns with their graduation requirements the next time they take a social studies course.

Meeting or exceeding the high school mathematics state assessment or successfully completing an advanced level or dual credit mathematics course the previous year.

• Students will be auto-enrolled in a dual credit mathematics course.

Meeting or exceeding the high school science state assessment or successfully completing an advanced level or dual credit science course the previous year.

• Students electing to take a science class will be auto-enrolled in a dual credit science course that aligns with their High School and Beyond Plan.

What are the opt out requirements?

Each year students and their families that are auto-enrolled in advanced or dual credit course work based on measures stated above must be notified about the reason for their placement and their right to opt out of all or individual advanced or dual credit courses. This must occur verbally with the student during the registration process. Students being auto-enrolled in three or more advanced or dual credit courses will be counseled on managing the expected workload. Students and families will be notified in writing using Academic Acceleration AutoEnrollment Notification form at the time that the student is auto-enrolled in an advanced or dual credit course.

What is the definition of an advanced level course?

The most rigorous course in the content area and grade level that is offered by the high school.

What is the definition of a dual credit course?

A dual credit course is s a course where a student can earn both high school and college credit.
