COVID-19 Testing

Now that school buildings are open for in-person instruction and learning, our goal is to keep them open. To do that, we are following the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to test and contact tracing across the District. Students and staff will participate in batch (or pool) testing.

Batch/Pool Testing

Pooling—sometimes referred to as batch or pool testing or pooled testing—means combining respiratory samples from several people and conducting one laboratory test on the combined pool of samples to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Protection of Student Information

Batch/pool testing provides for protection of personally identifiable information for each individual. If further confirmatory testing is required, every individual’s information will be protected throughout the process, including during contact tracing as we work to minimize the spread.

Testing

All information below will be updated as we receive additional questions as well as guidance from the health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Protocol For a Positive COVID Case

Data for confirmed positive cases can be found on our COVID-19 Dashboard.

Batch Testing

If a batch comes back positive

Secondary Students: Each individual in a classroom with a positive batch result will quarantine until they have tested COVID negative or have completed their quarantine.

Elementary Students: The students in the classroom will be quarantined for 14 days unless the batch contains samples from two classrooms. In that case, if all students in one of the classrooms can show a negative confirmatory  test, that classroom will not need to quarantine for the entire 14 day period (and can return on the day following the last confirmatory test verification).

Staff members who are not fully vaccinated and are included in a positive batch need to quarantine for 14 days.

Staff members who are fully vaccinated and are included in a positive batch test need to quarantine until they receive a negative test, administered a minimum of five days after the batch test. This will allow for verification that the staff member is/is not the positive in the batch test

Staff members who are fully vaccinated who opt out of the batch testing do not need to quarantine, even if they had close contact to the positive individual (within 6 feet of a positive student for 15+ minutes).

Self-Referral

If there is a positive COVID case identified outside of district testing (e.g. – parent referral)

Secondary Students: The students who have a suspected close contact with the positive individual will follow protocols in the Suspected Close Contact Process

  • When a positive confirmatory test is reported (at secondary schools):
    • The school will identify, and communicate with, students who are are suspected to have had close contact with the  positive individual (in all classes other than in which the batch test was performed and on the school bus)
  • In order to return to the classroom these identified students must quarantine for five days and then either:

a. Present a negative confirmatory test, or

b. Quarantine for the full 14 days

Elementary Students: The students assigned to classroom will be quarantined for 14 days.

Staff members who are not fully vaccinated and have had close contact (within 6 feet of a positive student for 15+ minutes) need to quarantine for 14 days.

Staff members who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine, even if they have had close contact with a positive student (within 6 feet of a positive student for 15+ minutes).
