BASEBALL:
The Bothell varsity baseball team lost to Skyline 8-5 last night in a game where relief pitching was not up to the task. The Cougars scored 5 runs on 13 hits. Max Kaetzel, Sawyer Wickstrom, Mingo Lemley, Andrew Olsen, and Logan Egge all had multiple hits. Starting pitcher, Sawyer Wickstrom, was cruising through 4 innings as the Cougars led 2-0. However, Sawyer jammed his finger sliding into third base on a triple in the third inning and by the fifth inning it was catching up with him. He gave up a single and two walks in the inning before being relieved. The Bothell relief staff struggled to find the strike zone and by the time the inning was over, the Cougs trailed 7-2. The team fought back to close the gap but couldn't push the necessary runs over the plate to win the game.
The JV boys team played a back-and-forth game with the Skyline Spartans that ended in extra innings with a 10-7 Cougar win. On the mound the Cougar JV started with Jarret Tyler who had an exceptional start keeping line up off balance and going 4 strong innings. In relief of Tyler were Brady Stutz and Drew Marino, both were nails throwing 43 of 62 pitches for strikes. The JV Cougars collected 12 hits. Brady Stutz pounded a fastball down into the deep left field corner at Skyline HS in the top of the first inning to get things going for the Cougars and he would later come around to score on a Tollian Nyhus base hit. Much success was had at the plate on the day as the Stutz ended with 3 hits and multi-hit games from Joey Crouthamel, Drew Marino, Camryn Wallace and Nyhus. Great team win going on the road to a tough place to play.
FASTPITCH:
The Bothell Fastpitch Varsity won their season opener 11-0 last night against Skyline. Leading 2-0 going into the 5th inning, the offense exploded for 9 runs in the 5th inning.
Taryn Bennett started the game on the mound and went 4 1/3 innings giving up only 3 hits and 2 walks. Taryn got in a little trouble in the top of the 5th inning walking the first 2 batters. After a sacrifice bunt moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd Julianne Rose came into pitch. With one out Julianne just dominated and got 2 strikeouts to end the inning to secure a 2-0 lead.
After one out in the bottom of the 5th Bothell got 5 consecutive batters on base via a walk or a hit. The big hit was a pinch hit 2 run single by Anna Fowler. Then Julia Radvick ripped her second base hit of the game up the middle for a 5-0 lead. After a ground out made it 2 outs, Freshman Kolbi Schmer, in her first Varsity game of her career, worked a 11 pitch at bat into a walk. Maya Bell then walked, and Taryn Bennett, Rachel Traxler, and Maleah Andrews ripped base hits to end 11-0.
Julia Radvick and Rachel Traxler led the team with 2 hits apiece. Maleah Andrews, Rachel, and Julia all had 2 RBIs to lead the offensive attack.
Maya Bell made a great defensive play in Right Field in the 4th inning as she threw a bullet to second base to cut down a runner trying for a double. Shortstop Maleah Andrews also threw a runner out at home who was trying to score in the same inning.
LACROSSE:
The Bothell JV Lacrosse team had their first home game last night against Shorecrest JV. Even though it was a wet night, the rain didn't stop our team from working hard and getting the job done. Our goalies, Alistair Hennessey and Owen Kolb, each had several nice saves in goal. The middies and attack worked the ball around the cage and made the Shorecrest goalie work, pounding the goal with shot after shot. A combined team effort resulted in a solid win of 9-6
